The patch on my property where they pop first is a big toothed aspen grove surrounded by white pines. I'm not really sure if there is any correlation but now that I think about it, they do seem to come up under a massive dead white pine down in the creek bed.

Sorry about the double post. Hey blitzfish...bring your flyrod next time you visit your grandparents. I pulled a 19" brown trout out of neenah creek last fall

hey skot I was just reading through the posts and have to say nice finds and there is hope for finding morels in this part of the state I live in westfield and have walked the woods a fair amount and never found any in this area the only place I have ever found any in my wifes old stomping grounds in south western part of the state. So you have renewed my wanting to look in the area again.

Been awhile since I checked in on the board. 2012 is turning out to be the best morel season on my property ever. The blacks popped super early and I've been watching these yellows for two weeks. Finally broke down and picked them today. They will prob be my last taste for this season. Stands of Big-Toothed Aspen are the key in this area therodg81. I've only got a few elms on my property, none of which are dead...just (I believe) a slippery elm along the tracks that the railroad cutters lopped the top off. I've been finding them around here for a solid month. The blacks have always come up really early and this year they came up in two waves about 2 weeks apart. Now I finally know the dead Aspen theory is true because out of the all the acres of public land around here, the only place I have found them is directly under a stand of live, dead and dying Aspens.
