Nice site, Jason/Jay told me about it earlier today. This should be alot nicer without all the internet idiots spouting off about this and that.I look forward to seeing everyone's finds and hope to add to it myself. I've already seen quite a bit of info just looking through the other threads.

Man, I can't believe no one has posted a picture of WI morels yet! I would think most people would want to be that person. Somebody on the board of negativity said that they found some growing near Portage but no picture.
Great job MIKEOLOGIST getting this board posted on the negative board!

I was really surprised that they have not deleted his post.
There was some pretty negative stuff going on there yesterday. It was entertaining to a point, but it is exactly why this forum was created. At least this time there was SOME moderation taking place.

stopped at one spot today... could'nt help myself still to early with all this heat and no rain I hope it do'nt effect the season. really need's to cool off a bit with some good rain's... I couldn't agree more. It is too early. As much as I think they should be popping, their not. I went out for a couple of hours today and found a lot of promising spots, but didn't see a thing. I did notice that I saw what I am assuming are mayapples coming up(small green bullet shaped growth about 1 inch out of the soil). That tells me it shouldn't be long. Just looking at the growth of all the underbrush and trees I know it is too soon. It will be early, but not this early. The forcast for the southern part of the state is for rain and cooler temperatures, so hopefully that will help. Patiience...patience...patience..... It will happen. I want to find one, but I don't want to find one smaller than my pinky. That's just mean.

So if you go out looking now, this is what you WON'T find growing. I call it "HOW TO KILL YOUR MOREL CROP". Basically, they are out there but you will only kill them for now. This is an older pic but you get the idea. I was looking for morels this day and found rice size morels starting and found this particular broken morel under me, where I was kneeling. My thoughts are, wait until next week, after the rain and at the edge of the forest you will find some small but pickable morels.

Does this pic work for you? I'm actually in Oxford in Marquette county but we have no local paper (pop. 532). Still have a Portage paper subscription as I used to live there. I agree about not tromping around too much this time of year..I'm sure I've smashed countless back in my early days of making "cattle trails" around every elm I find. Luckily I have a trail for my 4-wheeler that runs right past my patch so I can tread lightly 'til April. Been finding them since Monday around here. Mostly small but a few decent sized eaters here and there. Actually having some bigger ones tonight. Found a few pinky-sized yellows on public land yesterday. Not an elm in sight on my property...around here they tend to cluster around the dead aspen. Still can't believe they are coming up this early and are already popping through the leaves around here.
