Well, while walking around a south facing slope today, I found the first ramps I have seen this year. They were about 2- 2 1/2 inches tall. Another sign that spring is here! I will post a picture I took of them later. Edit: Here is the picture of the tiny ramps:

I took a 5 minute peek in the woods yesterday and spotted a few patches of ramps about that size also. I hope to be picking some this weekend or most likely later next week.

Shroomdoooooooom,
I cannot tell you were to find them but I can let you know that they are a very slowly spreading plant, and request that you carefully take parts of each cluster and not all of the cluster. My spot in Milwaukee county last year apparently got raided, a friend went there yesterday and entire swaths of ramps were dug up and gone... for years I had taken what I wanted carefully and now, I have no doubt, that some one will be back for the rest of them soon enough.

I was actually just fishing in Milwaukee county and found a few patches while doing so. I was very surprised how far along this area was, as it seemed much greener than the Hartford area, but then again the past few days everything is growing!!! Our lilacs are even starting to bloom behind our house as well as our asparagus starting to shoot!

Was scouting a trout stream today and checking some of my ramp locations when I found some of the bigger groups with 5" to 6" plants. Harvested 2 to have with dinner tonight but am very excited about the rest of the patches. All look great so far T

Well ramps are up in full force. I harvested some yesterday to dehydrate for seasonings. Mayapples are growing too...

My son and I went out yesterday to scout some new spots and walk thru one of them. As he says "We can't find some mushrooms, we need to get more"
No mushrooms, but found a TON of ramps. The entire area that we were loking in, everywhere you looked there they were.

So they basically pop up around the same kind of terrain as morels?

Basically, except they don't obviously focus around any tree type.

I was up in Polk County at the in-laws' place yesterday, and picked a handful of ramps from a small patch they have growing on their property. (I have also found morels within 20 feet of that spot, but alas, they aren't there yet.) Ramps are tasty though, and went very well with my eggs and left-over ham breakfast today.

I need some help...I found what I thought were ramps, many of them, but then I found real ramps (with the red on the leaf) and so I wonder what the other plant is? Basically it looks just like a ramp but a bit smaller and no red on the leaf...what is it? It smells onion like and it tastes union like but the size is more scallion like. Does anyone know?
