Someone posted the url to this board on the old board. I didn't know where you all went to. Glad to see familiar names. The old board is as uncival as ever, maybe worse.

Hi Steve! I'm glad you did find us...it's amazing that link survived this long on the other board. We've been trying to get it on there but the moderators keep deleting any post with it in it. Very sad but hey, you're here now and I'm glad because I have a question about your maple season; how did that go? It seems like you could have tapped all winter long but mentally I was prepared to start at the beginning of March and then it just basically got warm and the trees had buds so I didn't even try this year. What did you do? Anne

Hi EarthMom,
Had the best maple year ever. I risked tapping early due to forecasts at the time. Other years, had I tapped that early, the holes would have dried and healed over. Once I tapped the first test hole about Feb 7th and saw the flow, I just kept going. I only tapped 1/2 of my trees (28 taps) but managed to get about 3 1/2 gal of syrup! Barely able to keep up with the boiling. I pulled the taps on Mar 10th, normally about the time I start.
Good to hear from you!

Oh bummer. I had really wanted to get a lot of sap this year but I was very confused about when I should tap. Well now I know I guess. Would you say anytime after February 1st if it's a warm year or after January 15th? I'll be sure to do it next year though. So, are you leaving any TP trails for me yet???

Whenever the late winter days are 40+ and below freezing at night, is a good time to tap. The weather reports were calling for a week of this weather back in early Feb. As it turned out, we had about 2-3 weeks of such weather. It worked out really well for me this year.
No TP yet... stay tuned! Getting the itch to get out, after all, if the sap was a month early, maybe the morels will follow suit.
Traveling to St Louis over Easter, they should have popped down there by then. May have to take a walk in a woods.
