Those tops look too red to be kings in my opinion. The reticulation looks a little off as well...

OMTH...did you eat them all at once? I'm thinking new mushrooms are always to be tried one at a time. So in other words, try a little bit of one and wait a day to see how you feel. You tend to have bad reactions to mushrooms as I recall so you need to be extra careful...sorry.
So you ate the comb tooth, bluing boletes as well as the probable kings?

Mike, the redness you are seeing is just the way the photo showed up... they were brown as dirt... also they reticulation looked better once they were washed up... they were a bit grimey in the picture.
EM... I ate them all at once! I found the Bears Tooth to be the best but compared to the reaction of others (toilet time) the cramps arnt too bad... I ate some bread for breakfast and that has helped... it may have been more my medication (naproxen) I had to take extra last night and if my memory serves me right that almost always cramps my stomach.

OMTH - Hey, I saw that picture on my computer today verses my phone the first time. That bolete is a scaber stalk and probably what made you sick. They are known to make some people sick. Some people have no probs with them as I imagine I wouldn't but I still won't try them and I certainly won't let the kids. I also see that is a bears head and those babies are the best! Much better than comb tooth which I fount to be just a bit bitter.

Well here is to learning the HARD way! btw, I am fine now.
I still have that center light brown mushroom in my fridge... and since I cant quite figure out what it is... I think I will skip it.

Update...
Since I am under the care of the VA and since my clinic is in Milwaukee and I am in Ashland I spoke with a nurse on the 24 hour healthcare... we went through all the poisoning checklists and though I have a small amount of cramping still I need to go on a clear liquid diet for the next 24 hours... BAH! this mushroom is not worth it... Id rather have the runs from a chicken o the woods!

OMTH - For the love-o-pete, don't eat any shaggy manes! If you eat them with alcohol, or have had alcohol within a day or two, before or after, you WILL get sicker than a dog!

I just stick away from those things just for that exact reason.

OH NO!!! Those aren't kings those are leccinum. You probably got sick from those blueing boletes on the bottom left though. The leccinum generally don't make people sick (but there have been some reports) and neither does the bear tooth.
I've no idea what the grey shroom in the middle is.

not the blueing i had some of those last night... just fine! And if you look up the Leccinum (and the link above) more and more people are reporting ill effects from them. Talked with the botony prof here on campus he has gotten ill from them too... years ago, now he wont touch them.

I'm making mental notes on those things. I'd rather not find out if those things make me sick too.

I believe the one in the middle is a King Bolete and the one on the right is a bi-color. Thoughts? I found them all in the same region of a kettle last summer. I got pictures of the undersides if needs be. Attachments:
