Been finding a few fresh Maitake around Chippewa Falls lately. (October 10,12,13, & 15th) all around Big oak trees. Found 6 around a huge dead oak yesterday. The rains we just had are waking up some new ones too.

Several old, rotted or dried up hens have been found too. Looks like they were up from August through September. October is turning out to be a great month for Grifola frondosa around here!

found a couple more maitake. One (probably 11-12 pounder)was partly over-ripe a few days ago. One (about 4 lbs)was in perfect condition yesterday.

Found another nice one today, Halloween 2013. Weighed about 12 1/2 lbs when I got it home. It was a little on the dirty side. Took a long time to clean, but worth every minute.

You can usually tell by the size of the fronds if its gonna continue to grow. Up to a week. If it feels dry cut it. A young freshy is better than old and buggy. Now you have a hen tree check it every year and all the fat oaks around it they might pop now to november.

I found this one yesterday, this time my son and I marked the tree we found it under. I have found a couple on the in-laws' property in years past, but could never find the tree again. Maybe they just didn't produce again or maybe they cut the trees down, don't know, but I'll try to keep an eye on this tree. Attachments:

I found another really fresh one on Saturday growing near a different tree than the one above, sorry I didn't think to take a pic. My in-laws, whose land I found it on, seem to be getting interested in all the mushrooms I've been finding. I think I'm going to have to share these with them now, oh well, there is plenty to go around.

Found 19.5 pounds of Hen this last week-end! Some were very young and fresh, and there was one I had to leave as it was already going soft. One tree had 8 of them around it, but most trees had two. This was in the same area that we found a huge one in 2010. Then, nothing the last couple of years. Most likely, we were not there at the right time as we do have to travel about 100 miles to this area. Looks to be a good year for Hens.

I gave my coworkers those small hens I found on Friday, as they were on my bosses property and not my usual picking spot. They all loved them and went out and found their own. Mission accomplished. Not near enough people partake in mushroom picking, at least until the morels pop. Give some of those big, easy to identify shrooms away, you'll find more.
