Hi everyone! I am new to these boards and new to foraging. We bought some property near the southern Kettle Moraine state forest last year, and the previous owners told us they would usually find 4-5 lbs of morels on the land. I hadn't had morels since I was a kid, but that flavor is something I definitely remembered! I looked a little last year and found about 20...yum! Now I am hooked. I was reading the 'other' forum and couldn't believe how immature it was, so I am so happy to find this one (due to mikeology's post!).
I just ordered the book 'Nature's Garden' and can't wait to learn about other edibles on our property.
I look forward to learning so much from all of you. I have 2 kids under 2 years old, so my time in the woods is a little limited, but I hope to get out there as much as possible. thank you for all your expertise!

Welcome byknski,
I have a son that was 22 months old last year during the hunting season. I took him out in a back pack and when I found a patch I let him play around on the forest floor. Much to my surprise he saw what I was doing and started to help out! Now he keeps asking me to go hunting. He even points out woods and asks if we can go hunting over there.
Morel (ha!) of the story, don't be afraid to take those kids out there with you. Just keep them protected from ticks!
Also I made sure that he didn't really know what we where doing with the mushrooms. I didn't want him to go out in the yard and start eating random shrooms.

Welcome to the board byknski. May I recommend to you to save your property for later in the season each year or make sure you let them grow. I always check my private spots later in the season because that is where I can then get the bigfoots!!! You just got to let them get that big. Where do you roughly live? I am from Hartford, but go to school in Stevens Point and hunt a lot in both areas, but know way more spots down there.

Dan-the kids definitely spend lots of time in the woods with me, but I do worry about my 2 year old thinking she can eat things she shouldn't. Our property is also full of very thorny undergrowth (prickly ash, black locust, blackberries, buckthorn, etc.), so it's hard to get off the trails with the kids in tow. We are working to clean up the property and eliminate the invasives, but it is a slow process. Blitz fish- good advice, but last year I left a few to get bigger and they just dried up? Does that happen if we don't get enough rain while they are growing? I live in between LaGrange and Eagle--just a few miles from John Muir, Nordic, Emma Carlin, and McMiller parks. I don't have much free time to hunt on the state land though. Most of my hunting is done within range of the baby monitor during nap times .

That can happen from lack of rain or just from getting too old. didn't know that your young one was that little! You are in a great area though in the future if you wish to hunt state land with many choices not too far from you. You don't have to let them get too old, definitely keep an eye on them and you should do fine.
