Chanterelles are limited in number but in great shape. The dryness is holding off the bugs and causing the shrooms to be a little lighter in color. Picked 5.5lbs yesterday and left a ton of them to grow with the rain we probably won't get in time.

Where did everyone go this year??? Picked 13lbs of chants this year. I'd say this is the worst year of the three I've picked them here in Wausau. Going up to the UP next weekend. Hoping to find some ganoderma and some boletes....and whatever else I happen upon up there.

Patrick - I think you're in the narrow band across the state that actually has some mushrooms growing. I thought we were going to have a good season in the far north, but then we got really dry and the storms were passing to the south of us. Hopefully we'll get the rain that is forecast for later this week and it could be a good season yet. I feel bad for the southern half of the state. I suspect that its been too dry to salvage their season regardless of rain. We've had a few drought years in the NW corner of the state that got late summer/fall rains, but it was too little too late.

I am in the Madison area and it was super dry from the end of may through last week. We got our first good shot of rain last Thursday and we have had periodic rain since then. Two nights ago we had .5 inches and last night we got about .3 inch. I went out yesterday to check some chant spots, but didn't see a thing. I wonder if it was just too dry for too long or if we might actually get some to come up.
Anyone have any input on drought and chanterelle seasons?

Dan, I went out to my best chanterelle spot Monday night and not even a button growing! This is a place where I can pick ten pounds on a usual year but not even a button! I'm not sure what this will mean for S WI. There's a good chance for BTs yet as long as we get enough rain to soak the ground and then it doesn't heat up too fast without more rain but the chants...I just don't know because I've only been doing this for, well this is my 4th year doing summer/fall shrooms. I'm on a lot of FB mycology club groups and foraging groups as well and there are areas in the south of WI that have trees dying and are also in the same, if not a bit worse, of shape. It's really troubling! I just read an article online today about how Greenland lost all of it's ice in four days! From July8th to the 12th all of it melted! The researchers though it was a mistake initially...

Dan and EM - I don't think you have much hope for a chanterelle season this year in the south. (Sorry) I've kept pretty detailed notes for the past 10 years. During that time, we had some pretty rough drought when we were classifed as "extreme drought" on the droughtmonitor website. Looking back at my notes, we had terrible fall chanterelle seasons in the years when it was too dry from June to early August. Even when we got good rain in late August and Sept. we had no chanterelles. On a positive note, the gilled mushrooms and boletes bounced back really fast and we did have some good picking for those if we got enough rain in the late summer.
Ultimately, I hope you get a bunch of rain really soon and the mushrooms prove me wrong and you have some good hunting. In the past, whenever I've thought "I've got them figured out now", those darned fungi prove me wrong again.

i would agree, i have been in the woods a couple times now, haven't seen any chants at all.I'm in kenosha and it was super dry like I have never seen before. We probably have about 3" of rain in the last 2 weeks or so.I have only seen some chickens,Alcohol Inky's,some way past prime tiny oysters, a possible tree volvariella,a few Russula's of some kind.Tons of LBM's,some other assorted fungi and Bi-Color Boletes.Wish we would have had a little more rain, the boletes dont last long and they are in survival mode popping up fast staying small and dropping spores quickly would have liked to try some of them.I have the spot in my back for a hopefully better noext summer.

I went out Friday again. Didnt find much but I did find evidence of future shroom. Way too early to tell what it is going to become, but all I can say is that Tue growth was right along commonly traveled areas.....the same areas I would be looking for chants. I have my fingers crossed. I will probably update mid week.

Yeah, CISCO, I'm thinking it's done now. No chants. I took a hike through Lake Kegonsa S.P. and although we had all that rain this past week, it was dry as bone. I see on the precip map that Madison and just north of Madison, we got quite a bit more rain so maybe there but no way south of here. It just makes we want to cry when I see how barren the forest is. Sad.

Encouraging sign. I found a small patch of chanterelles just starting in a wash area in Sheboygan county. Picked a handful but left dozens of the smaller buttons to grow. Could it be the start of widespread Chanterelles in SE WI or maybe I just got lucky and found the right micro-climate?

I found one large chant today in the madison area. The bugs had taken a few big bites out of it and the underside had a big brown bruise. So, it's not going to get eaten, but at least I know there are a few out there.
Oh and if youdecide to go out looking, a recommendation......BUG SPRAY! The skeeters are out in full force making up for lost time.

Rob, you're a lucky man. I went out again a couple times last week and I'm not even finding old shrooms like I was earlier. Maybe someone just beat me to it......yeah, that's what I will go with.
