I don't remember what the exact temp is, I will have to search for it unless someone else remembers. All I remember is that the pop somewhere between 50-60 and I think they stop as it nears the high 60's? Someone shed more light on this subject!

A friend and I did some testing of our own today at work......you know, being scientists and all. We used one of our calibrated thermometers to test the soil temp at 4 inchs in a couple different areas. First we tested in an area around a tree that isn't going to get sunshine all day long. Results= 42F Then we tested an area in the sun Results = 40F (I think this might be kind of scewed because it wasn't that far from a road. There may have been more snow cover there from the plows). Next we tested a hillside that would be in the sun for almost all of the day. Results=60F. Read into the results as you please!

I looked into it more and what I seem to have found out is that we need 3-5 days straight where the soil temperature is over 50ish and the first ones will start to grow.

Well then it should definately be next week some time. The soil temp in arlington hit the 50's this morning. So.....Tuesday next week for the first shroom?

Soil temps have dropped dramatically with these lower temperatures. Not sure what that will do for anything that has already started to pop. Maybe a longer season though?

Thats my guess, its not even time for morel season yet. I think we just got a freak flush, and if you were bold enough to go out and check, you mightve gotten a few shrooms to fry up...

Found a Web site that determines soil composition and the best uses for it should be able to tell the alkalinity of the soil to, haven't really figured out how to work it but seems easy enough to use the little that I messed around with it. www.websoilssurvey.nrcs.usda.gov/app/ probably dont need the backslash app part .

I have used this tool at school. It is very laggy, but when you can get it to work right it is a great tool.
