Well, on a walk in the woods today I could smell that tell tale black licorice smell... but I could not find they oysters... but I am guessing in a few weeks they will be found!

I was out looking for watercress this week and didn't find any oysters which I thought was weird but I'll bet that since we had that small rain on early Saturday morning, there will be some now. I really need to go for a hike today...

In a normal year, I wouldn't expect to find oysters in Ashland/Bayfield counties until early June. This year... who knows? The ice is going out 3 weeks early, and it really doesn't take too long for a dead aspen to warm up when we get air temperatures in the 70s and 80s.

Cisco, I agree... with as many mosquito and ticks we dealt with yesterday... this is not a normal year at all!

Hello! I'm new here to this board. I was lucky to find these Oysters last weekend. They were unfortunatly filled wit worms for the most part but I did manage a couple of good meals out of them! I'm in the La Crosse area bty. Attachments:

So while cutting fire wood this winter I came upon a large dead tree and as I looked it over I noticed what appeared to be some dead oyster mushrooms on it. So I had to make a decision, a couple of loads of easily accessible, ready to burn wood or the chance at some mushrooms.
I think I have to go down and see if those mushrooms have come back yet.

Check your fallen aspens and cottonwoods, there should be a major flush of them after these rains.

Lots of oysters out here now. Picked about 5lbs of them yesterday with trapperhub when we went to look for morels in a new spot. The spot proved unsuccessful for morels, but plenty of oysters and probably a good hen spot for the fall.

I'm new to oysters (really any mushrooms except morels), but I found these recently on a dead tree: They seem to match every description I read of oysters, but I'm still nervous to eat them because I'm only 99.9% sure they are oysters. They definitely have the black licorice smell. Should I dig in?

I'm typically the board's "stick in the mud" telling people to not eat things, but those look like oysters from the photos. For a final ID check, do a spore print. Oysters should have a cream colored print. Also double check the gills to make sure they are straight edged and not serated.
Then try eating a little.
