A couple days ago I spotted a big ole chaga about 15 feet up, and well... I am not much of a climber so I brought my room mate (19, in shape, climbs like a monkey, etc etc) and he cut it down! Weighed it just now and it is 5.6lbs! He wants to sell it, I want to use it... guess we will be cutting it up!

Do you actually have to saw it from the tree, or is it fleshy enough that you can cut it off with a knife?

saw or ax, it is rock hard... some people use bats to knock them off, but they crumble a bit when you do that.

I have a sturdy, folding knife and use it to chip and pry it off. I just push it in around the edges and twist and it pops of some good size pieces. It's a pain in the neck but I just don't want to add the weight of an axe or saw to my backpack along with everything else.

My saw weighs less than a bottle of water, and if you are worried about the weight of a saw I imagine a nearly 6lb chaga is not something you want to harvest.

Yeah, a saw wouldn't be very heavy but I haven't found one sturdy and compact enough. I usually have my camera equipment along with water and first aid supplies so that doesn't leave much room for anything other than what we find to put in it.
