Found these while checking on a couple spots for morels. I have seen some pics but only became aware of chaga a couple weeks ago thanks to this site. It was not on a birch but other than that it appears to be similar. A small one was broken in half for a section photo. Let me know what you think. Thank you. T Attachments:

I am not a chaga expert, i have found it on a few birch trees, although i have never tried doing anything with it. It doesn't look "shelfy" at all though from what i've seen, so i'm guessing those are not chaga. It looks more like a burned clump sticking out of a wound in a birch tree. The ones i've seen are all black and crispy charcoal looking, with no white on them at all.

Nope, not Chaga. Has to be on birch.

Good to know. I kept seeing that black rot fungus on cherry trees this weekend thinking it was chaga, but then being confused because it looked like the black rot fungus.

Yep OMTH, that's totally chaga! You can tell by the conical shape and the color is like charcoal.

I know, I only posted it to show Tvacao what it looks like. I have been harvesting Chaga for about 12 years now... as for other mushrooms... well... not very long comparatively!
