Just picked my furst early spot of the good green stuff.I lve my route to work I can see it growing and then pick it in the dark on the way home and no one steals the spot from me. Sometimes 2nd shift has its perks.

Our really early spot next to our house started popping about 3 weeks ago (note, this is within 2 feet of the house so it warms much quicker), but i picked my first road asparagus two weeks ago and found a lot more this weekend. Washington County.

This makes me really jealous. I love wild asparagus. The only time I have found it (or really looked for it) was when I was driving to work one morning and saw the county guy mowing the ditch drive around something. I could see the fluffy top of the asparagus sticking out of the patch of grass/weeds. Went and looked and sure enough it was asparagus that was too far along.
What do you guys look for or do you just go and walk the ditches until you find some?

I have a few patches in the ditches near my house. I discovered them in the summer while out for walks, after they were too far along and had gone to seed (that is when they are most noticeable,) and had to wait till the next spring to start picking. They are noticeable also from the car while driving too if the patch is big enough, just try to pay more attention to the road if you're the one driving. Just have to remember where the spot is, if it doesn't get mowed it is usually easy to find again, as the dead stuff from last year will still be there. I usually am able to pick a few stalks every couple of days, not a whole lot, but good with my eggs in the morning, and way better than canned.

Dan, you are in a good area for asparagus. Just hit the countryside/farmland. Drive the roads and have a partner watch out for them as you drive. It can be as easy as that.

Already picking spears this year again must have been all the rain back in April.I don't usually pick it before Morels though. But I see from my original post that it was the same time last year.I think it will be a banner year for the spears.

Picked my first of the year feral spears on Sunday, May 5. They did not make it home- too tasty raw...

Try biking instead of driving on country roads. You'll see WAY more asparagus and it's easier to set the bike in the ditch than to park a car. Watch for areas with old barbed wire fences - the birds eat the berries from mature plants and "plant" the seeds in a row under the fence.
