Just read on the morelhunters.com message board that Black Trumpets are already being found in Missouri. Could be that summer mushrooms are in the not too distant future for us too.

Already? Wow that seems really early to me, but those are definitely trumpets! I can't wait to hit up my trumpet spots!! My guess is that we should see them by about mid June this year with the early warm up and rain pending of course!

We should almost be there, this warmer weather now and then rain should help within the next few weeks!

Awesome! I half assedly foraged for chants and trumpets last year, but this year Id like to actually find some. I remember hearing that they like washed out areas... Any other input?

I usually find trumpets near the base of mature oaks. Chanterelles also seem to like oaks. Between the two you are probably a lot more likely to find Chanterelles with their bright yellow/orange bodies. Black trumpets are dark and drab which causes them to blend in extremely well with the forest floor. I didn't find any trumpets my first year looking but did well after that.
I'm hoping mother nature gets this drought out of her system soon so we can proceed with a killer summer mushroom season.

Found a patch of dried out 1/2 inch black trumpets, or black straws rather, in Sheboygan County this morning. Looks like they received some heavy downpours to get them started but not enough rain to mature. Not going to even bother looking in SE WI until some more substantial rain.

Yep, we had some good showers to get them going, but it wasn't much. We need rain bad!
