Hey there y'all! Finally getting back to the best morel forum ever! I finally crawled out of my cave and went to forage for trout lily bulbs last week with my kids. Sam Thayer writes about how fantastic these are in his book, Nature's Garden, but every spring I forget to dig them before they leaf out. Well not this year...when you're desperate to forage you start remembering things! Luckily I know of a place that is literally carpeted with them so sure enough, I only needed to move twigs and leaves to find hundreds of sprouts popping. And they are truly the best raw! Super sweet and crunchy! I recommend trying them if you know where to dig them.

Trout lily bulbs? Wil have to give them a try. I know I have seen them in the past and will have to mark a spot for next year. We have spent the last month gathering and boiling sap. Spent a lot of time with snoeshows pulling a plastic kiddie sled with full sap jugs. Seemed like work until there was not enough snow and couldn't use the sled. Put 35 taps and finished with nearly 8 gallons of wonderful syrup!

The garlic in my garden is pushing up out of the leaves I mulched them with- good first sign. I think we are going to see things happen all at once this year, just a matter of...... WHEN?!?

I went out in S central WI this weekend but the foreśt floor was mostly bare. I picked small ramps and harvested watercress for the first time ever which was uber fun! Since the mayapples are only now just starting to pop, I really can't imagine finding pickable size morels for at least two weeks. I think by next weekend there may be tiny morel buds though...in my spots anyway.

The ramps are up in eastern Wi. also. Took 2 of the grandboys out for a nature walk and picked some of the trout lily bulbs for them to try along with some ramp leaves. Turns out we have trout lily all over the place! The 7 year old thought it was really neat that nature could provide us with a snack! Rhubarb is starting to leaf out and I am watching the buds on the lilacs get bigger with each warm day. Just a couple of more weeks,,,,

Cool Grama! I love it when kids learn about all the free, healthy wild foods!
