Hi there,
I read up on morel mushroom hunting, & I wonder if anyone ever gets together in groups & goes out on a hunt for these mushrooms, or is it all solo? I wouldn't mind getting together to learn in person just what to look for so I am not going on a wild goose chase looking in the wrong places. Thanks!

Hey there Tac. The Wisconsin Mycological Society has forays three seasons a year! It's fun and you can learn about ALL the gourmet edible mushrooms WI has to offer! Just google that name and you can check the calendar of events. To be honest, finding them is not as hard as finding places to legally look! So if you are a mostly public land hunter like me, locating the best morel habitat AND then beating other hunters there AT the right time is the hard part! The lil buggers can grow right in the middle of town if their host tree is dieing (or if the underground organism just feels like popping out a morel for no apparent reason). I wouldn't wait for someone to take you out; next week get yer hiking boots on and start hitting hills facing south and south sides of forests. Your best bet is to learn what a dieing elm tree looks like and look for those while keeping your down to the ground because around here, they also grow around ash, poplar, maple, oak... Good luck!
