I'm not a huge fan of cooking fresh puffball, but I've found adding puffball powder to my dishes and soups adds a great unique flavor. Simply slice and dehydrate as much puffball mushroom as you want. Once it has thoroughly dried, place it all in a freezer bag and use a roller to crush it all down in to a fine powder. Store it in a canning jar and use when desired. Every time I do this I use it all up before next years harvest, so I'm not sure how long it will actually keep.
[edit] Just wanted to add I am referring to the Giant Puffball.

What technique are you using to dry them and how long does it usually take? I always seem to find giant puffballs but never do anything with them. This seems like a viable option...

I use a food dehydrator I had picked up a while back for like $30, nothing fancy, and the puffball is usually dried within 12-24 hours depending on the thickness of the slices used. Once dried the puffball will literally fall apart, especially with the finer slices, and doesn't take much effort to turn it in to a fine powder.
