Got tired of seeing that I was last to post, sometime last year. Have been finding pheasant backs, but they are a LITTLE CRISPY. Snowshoeing with dogs yesterday, I stumbled on a patch of dead elms that look promising- just have to remember them a couple months from now....

I love winter, but this weather is getting old.
I have been having mushroom hunting dreams. I sign that the cabin fever has set in.

I had a morel dream about a week ago- they were everywhere! I love getting out snowshoeing with our dogs on the weekends and have been finding new spots to visit after the snow is gone. Dead elms hidden in plain sight within walking distance of home. Can't wait to see what might pop up. Did steaks on the grill after getting home Sunday evening, complete with a rub that included ground, dehydrated morels. Last year was good for me, so a few remain on the shelf. That steak was awesome! I may have pulled a Suburban out of a ditch yesterday, but the days are getting longer, the sun actually feels warm at times- it won't be long before things start jumping up from the ground...

Snowshoeing is a great way to get outside and find new trees and locations. Unlike CP Dan, I do not care for winter. But, since getting the snowshoes about 5 years ago, it has gotten me out into the fresh winter air. Besides finding elms, it is a good time to look for dried up chickens and oysters to revisit the trees in summer. Yesterday we gathered about 12 gallons of sap. Once maple season is over, mushroom season is right around the corner.

Most of the snow may be a couple weeks gone here in the NKm, so hopefully a month-ish. We went up to our land in north-central part of state last weekend and it will be a long while before there is anything there to see- all we found was elbow-deep snow...

Took a walk in our woods on Thurs. 4/17 and saw the trout lilies were just starting to emerge. Just 6 days prior, when we pulled our taps, there was no sign of them. Total of 9 gallons of the sweet gold for our little backyard operation this year! Went for a ride to the Norhtern Kettles for Good Friday. In the past we have camped for Easter, but this year the weather report didn't look too promising. It was actually quite nice out of the wind. The Loons have made their stop at Mauthe Lake on the migration up north. Always fun to watch and listen to them. Also watched a pileated woodpecker. Lots of water, and if you want to walk near the lake I suggest rubber boots. In fact, the boat landing was closed due to flooding. We did bring boots, so we were able to walk to the dam. The skunk cabbage is just starting to come up. Morel season is getting closer, I will be watching for the 1st reports coming out of southern Wi soon!

I see that there has been a sighting in Galena, IL. That is only about an hour from me, so I would think that in the next week or so things should really start hopping around here.

I was in Milwaukee on Saturday- there has got to be a find there at any moment now. Here in the North Kettles- found ramps, hepatica, trillium and bloodroot this weekend. I will be checking a few spots during the next couple days, could be anytime now with the warmer weather.
