Found my 1st chicken tonight on a stump that produced last year. However, not this early. Picked just over 2 pounds. Checked 2 other logs that have produced the past 2 years and there is nothing yet. Hope to find more soon.

GC, I am new to these, I found what appears to be old chickens from last year. What is the average time frame, and do I look at the same stump for more this year?

I have found chickens from July 1st all the way into Oct. Primarily on oak, and it can be on stumps, fallen logs, or standing trees. Finding them on the same log from year to year does happen, but not in the exact same place on the log. Sometimes there is a large flush 1 year, then nothing in later years. You do want to get them fresh, as the little white worms enjoy them also. Some people have told me that if you trim off the tender edges, they will continue to grow and you can go back throughout the season to harvest more. I have tried this several times and have not had any luck with that. Our favorite way to cook them is to cut them into nugget size pieces, dip in beaten egg, roll in crushed saltines and fry them in a little oil. Serve with ranch dressing. The grandsons that gave me the name of Gramacrocodile - think they are eating chicken nuggets. So, keep your eye on that stump, or any other log near by and enjoy them if they return.
