I agree- they are not. The middle one clearly has closely spaced, thin paper-like gills rather than the rounded, forked lines found on chanterelles. Sorry- toss 'em.

Hard to even venture a guess, possibly something in the Lactarius genus? I don't even try to identify those when I see them, there are a lot of mushrooms that can look like that, and only a few of them are edible and even less are worth the bother. If you don't have it yet - Michael Kuo's book "100 Edible Mushrooms" is a great source for learning the identifying features of mushrooms - pointing out what to look for, and what to look out for as far as poisonous look-alikes. I take it everywhere I go. You can also check out the author's website: mushroomexpert.com for a lot of useful info and pictures that can help with figuring out what it is you find. He has a glossary of mushroom terminology that is easier to understand for anyone who isn't a professional mycologist than other guide books I've tried to use. Check out his pictures of the difference between real and false gills. Disclaimer: I don't know Michael Kuo ( I did "like" his Facebook page though and I get no financial considerations for plugging his book. I do recommend it to anyone who is interested in finding edible mushrooms - it has been well worth the $20 or whatever I spent on it a few years back.

Newshroomer - It was very wise of you to post something here before eating it. I tell people all the time, "If I am not more than 100% sure, I don't eat it. It is just not worth the risk when there are so many other mushrooms I do eat". Case in point, I recently believe I found my 1st Chants. They look exactly like ones I have seen posted. I checked with the NA Audubon guide book, did a spore print, etc. Then - I took a sample to a co-worker who has had a different variety of chant before. He had some doubts. So - I threw them out. Even though I was 99% sure - I respect his opinion and will not take the chance. Invest in a god giuide book and, Good luck on finding other mushrooms that are delicious! It is a fun hobby and gets you in the beautiful outdoors.
