I'm pretty sure that is a giant swallowtail butterfly. Nice find!! Oh yeah! That is what it is! Thanks so much for finding out!!! I also saw some blue butterflies and from I just read there are blue ones as well. The blue ones weren't as abundant and I only saw them briefly a couple times. When I go back I'll try to photograph those as well.

Great photos! Whenever I've tried to take photos of butterflies, I've wondered if there wasn't some sort of Ritalin equivalent that I could mix with sugar water so that they would sit still! I'm going to attempt to post a photo with this message. It documents a near disaster I had during the foray a week ago in the South Kettle Moraine. I was plowing through some underbrush at a rapid rate looking for glimpses of chanterelle yellow, when I spotted a piece of hornets nest. Nothing surprising, since I have already seen a couple of chunks torn up by the windstorms this summer. Then I noticed that there were occupants, and that it wasn't a piece--it was the whole nest buried in the underbrush, less than knee high! Another three steps and I would've punted it! I froze where I was to get an idea of the hornets' flight paths before backing out slowly. I took one photo, it's hard to see the nest, but please excuse my unwillingness to get a better angle! SCOTT - Man, finding something like that in my path would terrify me! What does someone do if they get a bunch of those things chasing and stinging them anyway? I have to remember to carry benadryl from now on. I wonder if spraying them with my super deet spray would help if that happened... Do you think it had fallen out of a tree or did they build it right there? The other day I got a photo of another beautiful butterfly but sadly I found out that it had passed on or was about to because it didn't move when I jiggled the grass. It was just gorgeous!

I always love seeing the butterflies and the dragonflies as I wander through the wilderness in search of the mushrooms. However I hate and always freak out when I miss spotting a spiderweb and walk right in to it though! But if I manage not to yell or make too much of a commotion sometimes I can sneak up on other wildlife and get close enough for neat pic like this. The little fawn hidden in the brush just watched as I snapped a picture and continued by.

Holy He(( that's nasty. Was that on you? Good lord...and those spiders! Man, I just try to not think about it as I'm trying to pick the web out of my eye lashes "it's okay...look for mushrooms...there's not spider...chanterelles..." then try to calm down. Here's what you pick off your neck when you fall asleep in the woods after finding a motherload.
