Wow, very nice. Jealous again. I got out this weekend at my in-laws' place in northern Polk County, found 6 somewhat brittle grays and 1 half-free. Never found a half-free that was in edible condition, so that's a new one for me. Soaking them in a bit of salt water over night seems to have re-hydrated them. Hoping we get some rain today, as it has been really dry up here lately. Hoping to do some more searching soon, but got a lot going on this spring. Bought a new place in November with a few acres (haven't seen any mushrooms yet, hoping we'll get some edibles on our own property this year)

Trapper, I don't put the same effort into the black trumpets that I do for morels or hens. I have only found them north of here. Asked some hunters at work and they haven't found them either. But- don't put extra effort into them either.
EC Rob, congrats on the new place! Hope you'll find some edibles.
Shroomcrafter, good to hear from you again. And even better to hear you are back to hunting. Seems to me you had to sit out a couple of seasons ago.
Lilacs are just opening so I hope we still have some good morel hunting left.

Woohoo, well, we got some much needed rain and I went for my morning walk around the property and found one nice gray in a spot that i had thought looked like perfect morel habitat. I looked around for a little while before having to leave for work and didn't see any others, but i'm hopeful there are or will be more. Lilacs have just started blooming in Frederic too.

I took a walk in Sheboygan County on Saturday- only found 12 smaller yellows in a normally productive area, lots of pheasant backs and a tick. Not too encouraging considering how far along other signs were. I do have a spot that runs considerably later, I will have to hope for good things there I guess. Been waiting for activity on this board all through winter, good to see signs of life!

Went out tonight to a spot that in the past has always had lots of half frees during the early season and a good producer of yellows. Could not find a single mushroom! It can't be over already can it?!?
Welcome Deerslayer, good to hear from you.

Deerslayer, the woods are looking prime around here as of this week, I'm thinking the rain and heat should turn them on. I felt like it was early up till now. The difference in the canopy from where we were to the southwest and Sheboygan county were weeks apart. I'll be out this weekend and post any finds, good luck!

Well, I had to run back to work tonight and my boys talked me in to checking a couple trees. We found 6 fresh grays and plenty of stumps. Thankfully, we all leave a few behind for others from time to time and I was on the receiving end this time! Everything we found were 2-4 inches. That's a Case Trapper in the picture for reference.

Trapper, thanks for the good advice about the timing for hunting SW Wisconsin. Awesome photo you posted May 14, with all those morels laid out so beautifully. "Best hobby ever" is so right.
Gramacrocodile, You have a good memory. Yes, I missed a few seasons due to both my wife and I having some health issues. We're both doing well now.
I finally got to hunt a couple days, Monday and Tuesday, May 15 and 16. Found several dried up, but still netted 9 1/2 lbs., which was more than I thought I would. I'll try to post a few photos or a video. If I can't figure it out, I just posted the video on Youtube: "Morel Mushrooms - Still More Elms & Morels" My handle there is "creatorwise."

Trapper, you have given me hope there are still some out there! Running out of places to look but might have to give some a 2nd chance. Shroomcrafter, thanks for the video. Nice job showing the elms with the morels. And, finding a turkey nest or a even a new fawn can make the hunt even more wonderful. I'll be looking forward to hearing of everyone's weekend finds.

Glad to help! We haven't been finding large clusters in Sheboygan county, just onesies twosies by a given tree but the ones we find are big and fresh. Going to try another area today, hopefully the rain is light so we can get some time in.

Here's the gramacroc report: Went and checked a spot that had 1/2 frees 2 weeks ago. Nothing. Checked other spots from 2 weeks ago where we found some and found more! Another spot from last week netted 6 more we must have missed. Came home with 31 and had to leave another 10 or so in the woods. Most where past prime with a couple nice yellows. Hope the rest of you had good luck.

Well it looks like it's mostly over for me. Thought heading to Wausau this weekend would bring fresh mushrooms, but we were only happy to see others had not found our spots. The finds were plenty but only three we're worth trying to salvage. Until Trumpets appear, I wish you all a good finish and happy memories! We finished with sushi from Shanghai Grill in Weston.
