Does anyone around here ever hunt any of the hallucinogenics? Ive heard mixed reviews as to what species actually are natively growing in wisconsin. Were all adults here, so I think we can move beyond the faux pas and get to talking about mushrooms.

You don't really "hunt" the actives...they find YOU.
There's Gymnopilus species, Conocybe smithii, Panaeolus cinctulus...maybe a few others. I don't believe they are very common though. Pastures in southern states are better for finding actives.

I suppose thats true. I heard that there are gymnopilus sp and also Psilocybe semilanceata or something like that. Im not sure I would actually eat any I found, rather get a kick out of positive identification. Starting a spore collection too...

I'm pretty sure you're wrong about the Ps. semilanceata. Those are only located around the PNW U.S. and parts of the U.K. and Europe, I believe. If you really want to stretch the use of the term "hallucinogenic"... Amanita muscaria also grow in our region, probably more in abundance than any other entheogenic fungi. Though, most would consider them more of a toadstool than magic mushroom.

Hi ya MIKOLOGIST - You would like the website www.shroomery.orgJoe S told be about it as it has WAY more info than just the magic mushroom stuff. I do get asked about magic mushrooms on occasion...in fact, I like to make sure people realize that I look for EDIBLE GOURMET mushrooms verses the magic kind because some hear "mushrooms" and just assume the worst (or best as some would say!) I also get asked how to find them but that was never something I cared about experimenting with. I know many a mycologist who have and still do though! I hope the link helps.

Ive seen Shroomery before. It used to be quite an amateur type of site, not sure if it still is. Im sure the people posting have more knowledge in mycology than I would give them credit for, but Id still rather discuss with people who take an academic approach.
On that note, Amanita muscaria... heres how you keep a stock. You go find one, then feed it to a reindeer. Then collect the urine from it for a day. Drink the urine. Then collect your urine. Then drink it again. Then collect it again. ...and so forth... like waterworld....

So thats actually what the Norse would do. Im pretty sure Ill never eat an Amanita pantherina or muscaria. It supposedly invokes a type of rage/berserk kind of trip. The vikings would, as mythology says, do the pee tea process before going to battle.

That looks more like A. flavoconia than A. muscaria to me.
