Do some boletes mature without caps? I found a few white, large, fat and twisted-looking mushroom stems but could find no evidence that a cap had ever formed on them. They looked like bolete stems and they also had fully formed boletes growing next to them.

Did you get a picture? I've seen the same thing, I just figured they were some kind of Clavariadelphus. But hey, I'm still new at this.

I've seen a pinkish/buff mushroom that looked, well kinda naughty and it turned out to be a fungus that typically invades certain aminitas. You can check mushroom expert.com for it. The name is Hypomyces hyalinus. If it isn't that particular hypomyces, you can check the site for other possibilities. Maybe it was just a really tasty mushroom and the bugs/critters ate the cap already...?
