Found these on the ice age trail today, all in what I believe to be Chanterelle habitats. The middle ones appear to be Chanterelles (bright yellow through and through). The left are smaller and more orange. It's been a year since I've seen cinnebars and need a refresher. The ones on the right are stockier than those in the middle and have white stems and similar colored centers to the middle ones. Any help is appreciated! Attachments:

Here's a way better picture. The other ones look like the remains of some vampire attack. Artificial lighting + cell phone picture = disastrous coloring. Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Those are all yummy chants Payne...now where did you find those? I should probably go there and make sure it's the right kind of chant habitat...

Just an FYI to all...there seems to be quite a few of those false chanterelles popping up right now. They look very much like a chant but TRUE GILLS in that they are very thin, not blunted like a chant, and crowded like stacks of paper. I was disappointed many times yesterday thinking I had finally found some chants but they were this look alike variety: Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca. My brother-in-law mistakenly ate these with his dad (good old dad mis-identified them as chanterelles) and although he said it was good, he ended up sicker than a dog for a day and will now only eat super safe mushrooms like oyster, store bought and of course morels. In fact, he was in college at the time and was seriously thinking of going in to mycology until this happened! He went for botony instead! His father had no problems with those mushrooms but had eaten less of them. According to a website I read, there is some controversy about the toxicity of them. I think I'll pass!
