Does anyone know if all the mushrooms that look like bicolor boletes are okay to eat? There are SO many that are red capped, yellow pores, staining blue, boletes that I'm now really confused about them. Any thoughts? Any links that might help? I checked mushroom expert and seems as though they are edibles but...

Well, we just ate what I believe to be a bicolor and the kids and I totally agree that it's mighty tasty! Yum! Here's a picture of one:

I thought so too... then I ID'ed what I think they are in the Audubon field guide (red mouth boletes) and found them to be poisonous. They shouldn't make poisonous things taste so good.

I eat a lot of b. bicolor and/or b. appendiculatus. I say and/or because they are so similar that it's difficult to tell the difference without a microscope. If they are red capped, with a yellow stem and yellow flesh throughout...and only the pore surface bruises blue but very very slowly or not at all then you have yourself one of the two of those. Oh and they shouldn't taste bitter. Then you're good to go. Oh yeah they have reticulation on the stem sometimes too, but that isn't necessary. Hope that helps...I know they can be pretty tricky, but the taste is worth the effort! They rival kings.

Also, many of them will have red on the surface of the stem too...especially near the base.

Did they have orange pores? Yikes Dude...how do you feel? The general rule for boletes is no ORANGE or RED pores nor any that instantly turn blue upon cutting in to flesh. Did you find those in Poynette? I found them starting there which is weird because I've haven't seen them there the past couple years. EEK!

I blame my recent hospitalization on YOU.
No, the ones I ate looked like the ones that the audubon guide marked as poisonous. They have velvety red caps but no orange pores and they bruise blue. I ate them several times. I also ate the run-of-the-mill bluing boletes too. How did I feel you ask? Great. That's why I couldn't understand the poisonous classification. Who knows, either the orange pores don't show up well in the book in the photo or I'm a superhuman, man meets machine.
Anyway, when's the next chant/chicken/hen run?

you guys scare me!!!!!! the "I think or I'm am pretty sure " type of ID's you do is pretty scary I know for a fact earthmom has not been hunting mushrooms for too many years and I'm sorry but you scare me I have been picking mushrooms for over 40 yrs and I won't eat ANYTHING I can't identify 110% and then I sometimes don't eat it even after a spore print confirms the find -- there are mushrooms that won't kill you off right away but over time will shut down vital organs-- You do what you want but just be careful Please

IDing your finds strictly by photos or a few "rules of thumb" will likely catch up with you sooner than later. A species of bolete that looks a lot like an edible bicolor that does NOT follow the (red cap + yellow pores + doesn't bruise blue or is slow to do so = OK to eat) is the Boletus bicoloroides www.mushroomexpert.com/boletus_bicoloroides.html. This one even sickened a professional mycologist a few years ago. As a result it was recommended at that time to not eat bicolors before the bicolorides were further IDed and keyed so that they could be separated with certainty from safe edibles. So if you find yourself saying "I think it's a..." don't eat it. Or at the very least don't serve it to anyone else until you are CERTAIN of what it is.

Wait a minute here...are you guys telling me that I can't eat the pretty mushrooms? Come on now WILDMUSHROOM! You know I'm not going to eat anything that I can't ID. That's why I stay away from the bicolors. I just happen to get lucky with those bicolors we ate recently...they were obviously bicolors. I admit though that I do sort of fall back on the "boletes won't kill you" thing "just make you wish you were dead" as well as "only have a little bit and wait a day to see how you react to new mushrooms" and of course the red/orange pores/bluing flesh. But your concern is duly noted!
