Hi Everybody! Yesterday I went out for an hour near dusk, to a small patch of woods in town, to look for chants or chicken. Honestly, I didn't expect to find any chants but sure enough! One tiny patch of them had just started! There were a few pickable buttons and a few little pins but I hope that by the end of July there will be more in the area. It seems that at this time, when they all start, you won't find them unless you are willing to rake through the leaves around oaks; if you wait, they will grow up enough to see them. I think I just got lucky with these because they were that lovely egg yolk yellow against the dark ground, just between leaf litter. This proves my theory that chants grow everywhere but not usually in numbers. I've found them at every park I've been to in the past couple years of mushroom hunting. Well, I rambled on a bit so I'll post the picture already! Attachments:

The chanterelles have started at Devil's Lake and along the Ice Age Trail near Lodi. One spot in Devil's lake, along hwy 113 just after the turnoff for the south beach, had some chanterelles yesterday that were getting old. I went to the North Kettle on Sunday and there wasn't even a button there yet. They had some rain there this week, so maybe they are starting. This afternoon I'm heading to the Mirror Lake area.
So far I've only found a few at a time, no big hauls, but I think the flush is starting and should be going strong in a week or so. The bugs are terrible.

Chanterelles seem to be at the same stage here and still not gregarious. We really need some rain to get them up in numbers and give the little guys out there some shoulders!

Yes rain is what we need...they are finding gobs in St. Croix Falls, WI. Just go to weather.com and see their precipitation totals...lots of moisture.

I was out all morning and only found two little chants. Nothing else started at this location though. I did find and try my first gooseberries though and that was pretty cool!

I picked about 1/2 lb of chanterelles yesterday. Lots of little ones, but only in spots where the sun can hit the ground. Not much else fruiting. If we get a little rain with this heat then things ought to go.

Oddly I've found honey mushrooms, in two different parts of the state (south central). Not in numbers, just a few (see other thread for pics) and then one yesterday! Anyway, as far as I can tell my looking back a dates of pictures, this year is behind by a week. I think the big flush of chants and BTs will be the end of July of first week of August. Any thoughts people?

No kings at all yet. For about the last 5 or 6 years, the early kings have fruited at the same time as a Lentinus fruited on a stump in my yard. The Lentinus fruited about 2 weeks ago, but the kings have not.
The weather has been a little different this year.

Went out for about an hour with Payne last night but NO chants! In fact, wouldn't you know, the DNR went through another one of my chanterelle locations and cleared it...got rid of the underbrush, etc. Very very sad. We did stumble across chickens that were SO old that they looked more like Berkley polypore or hens than chickens. The photo is terrible because I used my phone but I'll post it anyway. Payne did find some dainty bi-colored boletes though. Some of the boletes are starting now. This next week looks like the rain we need here in the south; finally. Attachments:

Tomorrow, heading up north for a hot week of camping and on the weekend...the WMS Chanterelle Foray! I'm very excited to meet up with AVNGAL & WILDMUSHROOM, AARON & KRISTI for the weekend. The group this year is at it's highest number of participants at over 50 people! And this is only the third year! It's been a very successful foray for the WMS. This is the first time our family is tent camping for any number of days and what a fabulous (not) week to do it. Okay, no more fluff. OMTH - I'll send you a list of all the forays the WMS does during the year and possibly, including the Chant Foray, there would a few you can go to despite your move. I'll post pics of our goodies when I get back. Bye for now ya'll.

Headed up to the Sheboygan and GreenBay area next week. If anyone has any good 'areas' not 'spots' they could clue me in on I would love to get a couple lbs. of chanties under my belt. I heard the rain has actually been quite decent up there, unlike the 110 it's been here in and continues to be in Milwaukee.

Howdy,
I am a bit of newby, having only hunted non-morels for the past couple of years. I am interested in joining the WMS and attending the foray this weekend. Is there anyone that can help me out/direct me to the right person or info? I am pretty good at spotting some of the chanterelles, but the boletes--the only ones that I have been sure enough of in my ID to consume have been old man of the woods. I feel like I am missing out based on some of the comments I've read on this board!
Thanks, Scott

Checked my spot yesterday. I found even less than last time, I think. Just a tiny handful. It's just too damn dry!
Does anyone know if they usually appear back in the same spot, or do they kind of spread out and migrate? The ones I got yesterday were a little further from where I found them in previous years.

This is our first post on the new board. We sold about 2 lbs. fresh chants yesterday at the harbor market in Kenosha, and found about another 1/4 lb. of tiny chants. It's nice to have a new site, but it is confusing to navigate. it needs a more structured system that's easy to navigate.

cancel my post about navigating. Great job Dan. This site rocks. Different sub boards for all the topics we need. I now have it on my android and an very happy. I find it interesting that the old Wis. morel board is now being moderated. A little late, ehhh?
