Robedabu, the mosquitoes in northern WI have been and remain vicious... six of them attempted to carry my spaniel off to their hive a couple hours ago... had they a seventh I would have needed a shot gun instead of my .45 to free my pup!

I got a question for anyone who can answer this for me. I am fairly new to chanterelle hunting, but I have become unintentionally successful, aka stumbled across some in a middle of a path while working. I guess my question is for anyone familiar with the central U.P. area (aka the west side of the Hiawatha N. F.) I am stationed out of Munising and I seem to be having trouble with finding them in this area. I know this is Wisconsin Morels, I am from Wisconsin, but am only here in the U.P. for another 3 weeks and I am dying to get into some. The main tree types here are Beech, Maple, Aspen, Birch, and different types of pines. The ones I have found have been kind of in the open between some pines and some mixed hardwoods and I have been looking in similar locations to no avail. I was wondering if anyone has any tips for me for hunting in this area.
Thank You, Blitz

BLITZ - Can you go back to where you stumbled across you chants and see what kinds of trees are growing there? About 99% of the time, I find oaks in the close vicinity. However, I have found them growing under hemlock & pine with no oaks around while up north.

Blitzfish - Its still a little early in the north. I've been finding them in areas where the sun can get through and hit the ground for a good portion of the day. My standard spots under solid canopy have not fruited yet.
I haven't ever been able to associate them with any 1 kind of tree. There's generally oaks around where they fruit, but oaks seem to be nearly everywhere here, so that may not be anything.

Earthmom, Oak trees can be a rare commodity this far north . Thats the problem. The ones I found were right in the middle of pine and birch. hmm... Thanks Cisco. I thought they might be going around here by now because they've been finding them in northern WI, but I guess I'll have to wait until right before I leave to get into them strong.

I found a few pounds of very nice chants this week, very far up north though. Down here, south Wisconsin, it's SO DRY! North is a little better though.
There was an older couple camping near me and I got to introduce them to chants...they were sweet as can be! He was a forester and I talked to him about how the DNR has cut up trees in many of my chant spots and now the chants (and trumpets it turns out) aren't producing this year. I explained that maybe they should look at what kind of fungus grow before they decide to cut out certain trees. He said that he would bring that up in his circles. I just figure, what if they are destroying an important or rare fungus environment and he said it's true, they don't consider the fungus ecosystems. Anyway, now there's another couple chant lovers in the world!

Four days camping and canoeing in Boulder Junction... found one batch of chants that I looted throughout the weekend and used with pike, bass, and bluegill, also found a stump with shelves and shelves of sulfur shelf... too bad I am still wary of eating them though! Also found some lobsters but they were covered in a white fuzz so... I didn't eat them and still haven't tried them!

any luck for anyone lately, everyone seems to be tight lipped. Personally I haven't had a chance to get out, but I don't see the need to as we need some rain, REALLY REALLY bad!!!

Keep looking on the sides of the road (within reason of pesticide use) ...they love that compact soil.
