Every lobster I have found for the last month and a half has been rough looking... even the small ones that have barely made it out of the leaf litter are covered in holes and pits...
Any hints as to where to look for the ones that are not ruined by the time they are visible?

Omth! Where have you been? How was the move? Lobsters pop right after a good rain. You almost always have to scrub and then trim their little distorted bodies. haha. As long as they are not mushy just trim the buggy bits away and then cook and enjoy the rest. Chant habitat with grassy areas makes the sweetest tasting lobsters. They grow along root lines of oaks. Sometimes they are all lined up!

Avngal,
I am well, the move was good... ish... friends didnt make it over to help so I hired a crackhead (he admitted to it atleast) and he stole my gps... guess my morel spots are lost forever!
as for the Lobsters, I am only finding them (along with chants) in the cedars up here... and they dont look salvageable at all. If I cut off the bad parts there might be a bite left!

Omth...sorry to hear of your lobster woes. Let me know if you decide to come down for a visit...lots of hens in these parts in Sept.

My favorite lobsters are found in mostly pine areas but that is mainly because they don't have all the leaf litter and other stuff to come up through so you can find them as big as Pacific North West variety...right around pound each. The ones I find here in the south tend to be quite a bit smaller as well.
