I'll be leaving Thursday morning to head up to the lakewood/mountain area for a hunting(grouse/woodcock) trip. I will be in marshy/wooded areas of the Nicolet forest. Hope I don't miss any birds since this will be the first time that I will be looking for things on the ground as well as in the sky.
Has anyone been to this area of the state recently? Is it dry like the rest?

good question, i'm heading up there (closer to Tipler) next tuesday to do some meat hunting as well. any mushroom updates from the area would be appreciated. I lived in Iron River, MI for a few years, but that was before i got addicted to mushroom hunting, so i have no idea what i'll find up there.

I am up in Ashland, some areas are dry even though we did get some good rain a couple days ago... Though I imagine I am a bit further north than you are looking I have been too busy with school to do any mushrooming, or grouse hunting... another weekend of sitting in front of my computer is scheduled already then the 14th - 17th I will be in Milwaukee finally getting the rest of my belongings...
Best of luck on the hunt... mushrooms and birds alike!

You might need to bring a GPS because in those swamps you tend to get really turned around after hours of crawling around picking those little gems! I've never been to that part of the forest but I'm very sure there will be boggy/swamp with spruce! Here's a pic of what you're looking for: You should still find lobsters and hedgehogs too! Not sure what else but...TAKE PICTURES! (I haven't been in the forest for a couple weeks now)

I have been slacking on the update. Been kind of preoccupied with all this baseball stuff. (Went to the game on Monday) I've been having a pretty good week. Anyway. There were very few birds. Not sure if we were there before the migration or if it has to do with how dry it was. Probably a combination of the two. It was beautiful up there. The trees were at what I would consider peak color. Earthmom, I didn't see your post before I went up, but I definitely did see mushrooms that look lime the ones you posted. I didn't pick them of course because I didn't know what they were. Still probably wouldn't have, since I don't really know what I am looking for on them. I found one small cluster of fresh oyster mushrooms. There was another cluster about 25 feet up on the same tree, but there was no way that I was going to be able to reach them. I also found a couple of mushrooms growing on a birch tree right next to the cabin. Again, they were about 30 feet up, so I couldn't really get a good look at them. I am guessing Piptoporus betulinus This pic doesn't do it justice, but the sun was shining thru the yellow trees on the drive to the cabin.

I just got back from Tipler last night, after almost a week of camping, hunting, and fishing. Only saw a few mushrooms, my brother discovered a few really old lobsters, and my friend spotted a lone shaggy mane, not bad for two non-shroomers. i did look in the bogs for chants, but didn't see any. we caught a few trout, got one grouse, and one snowshoe hare. definitely a good trip, even though we didn't end up with much to show for it, it is beautiful up there.

Hi All! Welcome Marty! It's so great to have another shroomer to talk about mushrooms with!
My fall shrooming season has been mostly nonexistent HOWEVER I'm finally getting out for a trip north, hopefully closer to home, to get some "winter mushrooms", the yellowfoot! Aka "bog mushroom" "bog chanterelle". You can find them by the hundreds right now. I'm skeptical about finding much else though but I think I remember hearing that blewits grow after the frosts so that'd be now for certain. Has anyone found any bears head, comb tooth, etc., lately? I am hoping to find as many varieties as possible because the Willy Street Coop is having their DO IT YOURSELF FAIR (it was rescheduled from August because of rain) this Saturday so we, The WMS, will be there to talk about foraging wild mushrooms and so I'd like to have some yummy examples to show people. Come on down and see us! Especially if you want to sign up with the Wisconsin Mycological Society (WMS).

OMG!!! Thanks WM2005! That's very exciting! I've never actually found a blewit before so hopefully this will be ghe trip. I plan to drive northeast today but I have really limited day light so when it's sunny enough to start looking, then I'll be "there". The NE got the most rain this year so that's the location (sorry Patrick, again I won't be going through Wausau but I will likely be up there for xc this winter).
The fair is at a grocery store called Willy Street Coop on Williamson Street in Madison. It'd be a great trip to Madison because there's also a BIG St. Vincent DePaul thrift store less than a block away!! Oh how I LOVE LOVE LOVE that place!

Well, I went north, found a few, like ten, yellow foot and that was all. I went north again two days ago to check some bogs but this time nothing at all. My theory is that you have to be in very mature spruce swamp/bogs to find them. So in other words, pretty far up north. Next year I'm going to go and search for bogs for a week (have the hubby take off a week and I'll go) so that I can find the most southern most bogs that support yellow foot. Yes, you can go to Bayfield and find ten pounds in an hour and a half (like a mycologist I know did last week) but I don't want to travel six hours to find them. It might come to that I guess but we'll see. Next year! I can't wait!! A whole week!
On a different note, my sis found quite a few clusters of gorgeous perfect oysters after Mondays rain. She also found clusters of perfect velvet foot (enoki) so I'm going there this morning to pick the other clusters of VF that weren't ready on Tuesday. She also has a little park in the hood that has one of my absolute favs, meadow mushrooms growing! I imagine that after the rains earlier this week, they should be ready to harvest! Otherwise, I'm pretty much done for the year.
MEADOWSWEET - Does anyone ever pick meadowsweet when they are out? I smell it all the time but I have no idea what the plant looks like. Any help would be great!
