Needed to split off from the other thread, it was getting kind of big.
I have photos from today to post, but apparently photobucket doesn't like the galaxy 4 for some reason......to be continued....

Silly bucket, you can't beat the persistent..... My oldest sons first find of 2013. He insists to carry a stick like dad.... His total finds: My total finds from a lunch time hunt......hate it when I have to go back to work in the middle of a patch.....yes there are some tiny ones....I feel guilty about that now.....

I went on a scouting mission in the NKM area yesterday, to see what the woods would tell me. I found 11 small greys and 5 pheasant backs just cruising through. Since this spot is heavily travelled, the 11 went in my scrambled eggs this morning. Another couple days should provide some really nice finds. Also got close to two gobbling turkeys and a doe- nice day to be out in the woods- but then they all are. All were found in deep woods, east-facing slope. Good luck all!

My first BIG find this year. It was a semi-accidental find at that.

Really nice one Payne! Dan's adorable son inspired me to post a pic from this morning. My son and I came across this small morel that we were going to leave grow but he accidentally popped it off the stem. Oops! Oh well, he was making it his mustache in this picture! Little cutey! That looks like a half-free to me rather than a "false morel," but I could be wrong.

Okay, so I am looking at the adorable kids with their mushrooms and then there is EC's photo's of the motherload! WOW! What a great find, thanks for sharing the picture's. I agree with Payne, that does look a lot like a half free that we find. If it is only 1 and you tossed it, no big deal. In my opinion they don't have the same flavor. Cut it in half to see how the cap attaches to the stem and compare it to a reliable guide book Better safe than sorry though.

Yeah, the field guides help eliminate some uncertainty.
I don't believe, however, that there are any poisonous mushrooms that resemble half-free morels.
I know there are some semi-toxic mushrooms that look a lot like yellow morels and have a cottony texture on the inside when cut open. I've never met anybody who has found one though.

Yesterday I walked through the same spot where I found 11 on Tuesday. Walked out with 87 ranging from small to medium, also saw a number of buttons just waiting to pop. So it looks like I will need to go back there- I did not scour the area, just took what was easily seen, so there should be more to come. Also found a half-free and several pheasant backs. The best is still to come, although the fettucini alfredo and omelette were tasty!

I believe you guys are right. I looked into after I saw your post. I didn't even bother picking it, just left it to grow. Those half-free's don't look all that appetizing anyways! There should be plenty more on the way with this rain we are getting. Hope you all have as much luck as I did, and hopefully mine will last : /

Okay avid morel hunters...is this the craziest year or what??? Where we were yesterday, we found quite a few pickers but also MANY very small ones just literally starting! One amazing monster elm had so many that Payne noticed some that had been stepped on. From from I've seen on Youtube, they are at perfect picking size 26 days from bud so to me, that means we are going to find many many great morels in southern WI until just about mid-June! Does that mean picking in northern WI on the Fourth of July? Do any of you longtime hunters ever remember this sort of season? Cisco? Marsh? I recall in the very early ninties, having a summer that only went over eighty degrees once or twice. Maybe that year was a lot like this one...I think it was 1990 or 1991.

They have mare their way to central Wisconsin! Found 17smalls near Wausau this morning. I checked these spots last Thursday with no luck but with the rain and warm temps it's on!
