anybody finding any morels in the Eau Claire area yet? the asparagus is just starting to come up here, and the lilacs are about to bloom in my yard. yes it is a very strange year. i've been doing a little bit of hunting for morels, but haven't seen any yet. i think in a few days they should be up with all the rain the last couple days. hopefully i'll be able to do some real mushroom hunting this weekend, we've been a little busy lately with trying to sell a house and our oldest just graduated high school.
we just made an offer to buy a house with a few acres of trees up in polk county, can't wait to have my own woods to find food in! i didn't see any morels on the property when we walked around it last week, i think it might be still too early up there, but there are a few dead/dying elm trees, so pretty excited about the prospects.

I took the kids to a spot I found last week where the morels were too small. Here's a video I made of them. It's really the first time they've picked them; they've been out with me hiking countless trails over the years but never found any so I took them to a "sure thing" spot. Check it out! Sorry for the bad filming...I was paying more attention to them than what I was actually filming. m.youtube.com/watch?v=VD6B58Utuz8

So I was out all day Saturday helping a newby learn how to find morels. When he went home I stayed and collected several pounds or the day. Everything from the yellows down the middle to the left were my Saturday finds minus the near pound I gave the newby. All those on the right were my previous Sunday.

I took Sunday off and went out again on Monday and had a blast! 89 under one tree! That's never happened before so all the walking I did to finally find that tree was totally wrth it. I'm going to buy a scale so I can finally figure out what my poundage is after each trip. Here's Monday's take:

So after taking my son to 4k I stopped for a latte. On the drive home i saw a wooded area that I thought I might quickly take a peek in but that turned into a few hours of absolute fun! I had walked into a dying cottonwood patch that was spitting out morels far and wide! I've heard of the cottonwood as a great morel tree but its never happened for me until today and it truly was fun! Here's the take for today...so much for getting any housework done though. The pan on the right was the cottonwood patch...the pan on the left was the was what the kids picked this evening. It really seems like an incredible year! Check dead cottonwoods!

I wish they would grow like that up here! Sheds and shrooms, not a bad start at all EM! Congrats!

Nice finds EM! Careful with that bare foot- you're gonna get a fungus!
It took me all of 40 minutes to get my turkey, so I had time to prospect a piece of land that I otherwise would not see at prime time- more turkeys, squirrels, woodchuck and mosquitoes. I think the elms there were TOO dead. If this rain stops, I will be going back to a spot that I checked last week and left a lot of buttons to grow- anticipation is HIGH...

The anticipation was rewarded with 91 nice blondes, too bad I only had an hour or so to kill- and it was raining. I know there are more there to be found, just need to carve out the time. There were also numerous half-frees, which are still there and a bunch of pheasant backs.

Lunch time hunt in T-33 minutes..... 2 kids really crack down on the amount of time that I am able to hunt this year. Beginning to think that I might have to start night time hunting because then the wife/kids will be in bed and I can hunt as long as I want. I wonder if they would be easier to find by the glow of a flashlight? ?

Eau Claire area has some little ones out now. We left some growing the other day. Can't wait to go back. So far, the weather is promoting slow growth, (good) but also some mold (bad)

What a great year! Looks as though this year may make up for last year. I have been going out until dark after work all week, yes even in the pouring rain. Lots of fun and lots of mushrooms! Still have some more spots to check over the weekend. The dehydrator is earning its keep as well. I have found the lower areas where I have had luck in the past are still too wet and not producing. May have to go back and check again if we dry up soon. Too bad gas is so expensive, grampa crododile isn't totally on board with me driving to 2 other counties to hunt. Congratulations to everyone on their hauls!
