I just had a thought that whoever amongst us finds the first WI morel, could get a picture with a local newspaper/date, etc. but also, this is key... write this board's WEBSITE ADDRESS in big black marker on the newspaper, with the morel, so that when it goes viral, all the good people from the other board will come over here since the "moderators" won't let us advertise this board over there. Cool? Great!

OH man...just checking the other board and I see I forgot an extremely important point brought up; that when we go out looking too early, we smash all the little morels we can't see yet. I know that although we will see the first south hill, edge of forest morels this month, nothing IN the forest will be pickable until April so everyone please do not look for morels IN the forest until April or you will cut your morel crop in half! Seriously! For now only check ditches, edges of woods (as in outside of the forest and bring a thermometer if you want to be sure about soil temp) and lone trees sitting out on a lot because those are the only trees that will have the correct soil temp to produce this month. Good luck!

Good idea EM!
I went out yesterday for only about 45 minutes. I did go ito the woods, but I did not leave the deer trail I was hiking on. I have been worried about the same thing.
I took a thermometer with me yesterday and check the tempp of a south facing slope that has a decent amount of tree growth. The temp came out at 52F, so it is in the right range, but still needs time. I think the frist one will be found on the first day of spring (march 20th).

great idea EM! i agree with that whole dont walk in the woods thing. i think it may be a few days still and we actually could use some rain around here. soil seems slightly dry for this time of year and that isn't a good thing. I would go looking for blacks if I had a good black spot, but I have only found them randomly and never in SE WI where I am right now. I did take a peek today though, not long and not into the woods. It seemed like the initial growth that I notice right before the first morels is there, but off by about a week, so I think I agree with Defo on the 20th as a guess now. At least I have some open field spots on some southeast facing slopes that tend to produce early... too bad they tend to be hit by everyone else the past 2 years though. I found this new spot 4 years ago and only ever saw 2 others there and I easily could pick probably 5-7 acres worth of straight morels (not including the gaps between the areas) and could pick 5lbs a day of new ones or ones I had previously missed coming through the grass. Last year every one picked the easy spots with little to no grass and I had to pick and weed through all the grass and maybe found 15lbs total here... time to find more spots too I guess...

Blitz- your spot sounds like heaven! Wow that's the best! I'm getting pretty good with spots but they are hunted by a lot of other people too but I guess that makes it more of a challenge and I do like a good challenge! So you find them growing in the grass? I found some in grass once but I haven't since. I suppose I'll check grass much better this year. It sure is exciting to get going already!

Hence another reason why I can't stand the other boards...this is just everything that I hate about how morel hunting has gotten so popularized. Attachments:

You found those today? great find MM!!!
Edit: I saw the post of these on Chris Matherly's site. They are from Vermillion County, IL. Good find though! That should mean we should find the first then just let them grow a week at least...

That's a great idea jason, do you preserve those in some way then?

Yeah, totally not my find, and yes it's from Chris' site. I posted it in awe that people would think it smart to pick shrooms that small. Like Jason said, no worries about the first for sentimental sake, but why on Earth would you pick em that small instead of letting them grow?

Did you notice the Tattoo? 'Regrets', that's fitting. 'If only I would've let these grow!'
