Uh yeah, bone dry is right. I checked out my newest trumpet spot yesterday and I'm pissed! All the really small ones I left last week are tiny dry straws now! Ugh. I'm mad and sad There's hardly anything growing right now. Such a crapper

I hear ya Earthmom. This is the second time this summer ma nature has given us a good soaker which started a crap ton of trumpets but then didn't bother to follow up with anymore significant rain until they had completely dried up. What a tease. We just got a good rain this weekend but I'm not going to get too excited about new trumpets until there is more certainty of immediate future precip.

The weather report says rain on Wednesday but I guess I won't believe it until it happens. It seems like the rain is really patchy when it does happen and the reports are never accurate. On another note, I've got some foetidus in my fridge that are over a week old now and they are as fresh as can be! It's like they are still growing because of the wet paper towel I keep in the bag with it. I find that really interesting!

The last post by Kristi was actually posted by me. I forgot to log her out and myself in. I got tired of waiting for mother nature to get things started around here so sunday I decided to take a long drive to where the rain's been recently...Stevens Point. I found some sweet tooth, cinnabars, milk caps and bi-colors, but wasn't really wowed by anything until I was almost to my car to make the 2.5 hour drive home at the end of the long day hunting. I finally found trumpets!! Hundreds of them, fully grown, concentrated on a mound next to a small pond. Man, were those suckers exhausting to pick. It took me a little over an hour to harvest all 2+ lbs of them. So yeah, I guess it would be great to get that rain on Wednesday so we have some closer to home, but even if we don't I can't really complain anymore this year.
I really wasn't expecting to find trumpets because of some misconception I had about them not growing in the northern half of the state. Anybody know how far north they grow?

Good score! I have found them in Eau Claire / Dunn Counties, but I have only found two small patches of them. (I think I harvested maybe 15 last summer, and none pickable this year, i would really love to stumble on more of them though.)

BT's are just getting started in my area. I have a small patch of about 40 little guys in an area that produces about 3-5lbs every year. Seems like each species of fungus continues to be about 2 weeks late this year. Must be the cold spring.

anyone covering Lake Eau Claire? I have a friend who is finding them in her yard. She doesn't travel beyond the yard and "can't stand mushrooms".

I live near Fall Creek, and have been out near Lake Eau Claire on public land a few times, and found a couple dozen chanterelles last summer. I found a handful of cinnabars a couple of weekends ago just looking around a bit near the beach, but i haven't had too much time to hunt this year. (It's only my second year shroomin, haven't found any good "jackpot" spots yet.)

Any chance I can put a GPS in your car? You have an incredible knack for finding those BTs Aaron! Was Kristi bummin' that she wasn't with you? Oh boy...I am so green with envy! On the bright side, I stopped by one of my good trumpet spots yesterday and saw that were really trying to come up. Basically, if we get a rainy Labor day weekend like is usual, the trumpets will pop. I do think Patrick is correct about the cold spring though. A combination of the two is making for a bad chanterelle and trumpet year. I bet if we get that rainy September we'll get a big ole flush of late chants as well. I'll keep my fingers crossed anyway. GOOD JOB AARON!

Oh yeah, something kinda funny...when I did finally find my BTs yesterday it was dusk so I was totally scrambling to find them before it got too dark. I can tell you that at a certain point, you just don't see them anymore no matter how large the BT! I kept regretting not having brought my flashlight when suddenly I realized I could possibly use my phone for light! I put on the camera and kept touching the screen so it would focus on the ground which in turn makes the flash go on for a moment...and I mean a moment as in a split second. I got tired of constantly touching the screen and thought "I wonder if they make an app for this?" Well sure enough, you can get a free flashlight application for your android! So I downloaded it and used the LED on my camera the rest of the time to pick! OMG, they make an app for everything these days!

Hey all! The early September rains have started so keep watching your BT spots! If they didn't pop this year yet, I imagine they'll go nuts after a couple good days of rain. Good luck and keep us posted with pictures if you find them!!

It seems like this early September rain is continuing to avoid my area after Milwaukee has finished it's 10th driest August. I hope to find some on our way up north tomorrow.
