I checked my most reliable BT spot yesterday and did find several which was inspiring. I'd say that if we get a good soaking and temps not too cold, people will find BTs yet this year. Some of the ones I found were different though...they had a very thin "stem" that blossomed out to a very ruffly floral "cap" and there were very fine veiny gills on the underside. I'll post a pic later...being too lazy right now. This is yet another variety I plan on giving to UW Lacrosse for research. I'm hoping I find the inner motivation to go back to my BT & ignicolor spots just to see if anything else has popped.

Hey Earthmom,
I'm heading out to Devil's Lake area this week to hike with a pal. I'll keep my eyes peeled for trumpets and let you know if anything is still around.

Hey Earthmom, I'm heading out to Devil's Lake area this week to hike with a pal. I'll keep my eyes peeled for trumpets and let you know if anything is still around. I'm at Devil's lake probably three times a week. There's nothing here except for pretty. Of course I'm really bad at this foraging thing so you'll probably make out like a bandit. Have fun avngal

Hi All! Has anyone checked their BT spots lately? I checked mine a few weeks back and found a few. Just wondering if the rain some weeks back and the warmer weather has helped any grow. I'm also wondering if the warmer weather continues during and after this coming rain, will there be another flush? I hope it's a lot of rain regardless.
DD - I sent you a message about your trip...did you find any yellow foot? What did you find?

Found my first trumpets of 2013 today. Even though they are just starting a lot of them have dried out and gone bad already. There are many healthy shoots coming up which will need rain soon. I'm going to be SUPER PISSED if mother nature screws me out of trumpets for a third year in a row. The current forecast doesn't leave me too optimistic.

Hey Aaron, what kind of terrain is around your bt spots? I haven't done anyhunting yet. I hear they like hardwoods, but that's about as far as I know unfortunately....

I find black trumpets mostly around slopes and at the base of oaks. Kind of frustrated because we got some fairly decent rain today but it's probably about a quarter of the amount predicted. We'll still find some trumpets but a couple days of steady rain would really make them pop. Just plain tired of finding nothing but tiny dried out trumpets the past couple years.

Hi ya Aaron and Kristi! The BTs are out there but don't worry, it's actually still early. My reliable spot still has skunk cabbage growing over where the BTs grow. some BTs have started there but not in the large numbers they have in the past and I think it's because there are still large Sk cabbage leaves blocking the sunlight there. I've never picked there when the skunk cabbage was still up so...it's early. I heard there's a tropical storm brewing in the Atlantic so that will start the late summer rains coming. Good luck!

Strange year. Most things seem to be running a couple of weeks behind. I found a few mature BTs yesterday, 3 weeks earlier than I ever have before.

BT's are really getting going in Wausau. I'd say they'll be peaking later this week. I wish I had more spots. I only manage a half pound at best each year. Hopefully I'll find some more spots this year.

Trumpets have started in southeast wi. I spotted some tiny straws yesterday morning in a couple spots that receive decent sun exposure. Nothing yet in the more shaded spots. Chanterelle buttons are starting also.

Brookie, I didn't find any my first year looking (2009). I generally find them around oaks. Trumpets need A LOT of rain and dry out easily. If this weather pattern holds we should be finding them. The only summer I've found them in great numbers was 2010, a very wet and excellent year for all fungi. 2011-2013 had been too dry for them. Unlike chants they are drab in color and blend in very well with the soil and old leaf litter. Look in wash areas also.
