I belong to another message board about Morels of course and someone posted this yesterday "I found some small ones 30 miles north of Madison!!" Now I haven't been out yet but the signs that the ground is warm enough are there - Dandalions are out, my asparagus is about 1 inch... So I would take a little look see this weekend. Tonight is supposed to frost tonight to, so if there is any little ones out there it will sure to freeze them and set us behind a few days. Happy Hunting.

I'm not mama baer sorry! Just a 3rd generation shroomer, I love, love it...Ticks n all. Black shrooms i mostly find in dark sandy soil close to pines/Elms. But i also have found black ones right beside a yellow/golden one. So i don't have a theary on these, just that they are early in the season and delicious. I'm going out tonight and even if I find an intsy tinsy one i get excited... I have the FEVER BAD... Happy hunting.

Deerhaircaddis... I can't wait to bake up some walleye that i've caught with morels! I've seen 2 dandelions open up here in point, back at home a saw quite a few, but most were still not even close. Queenshroomer, skot on this board has been finding small blacks for about a week now.

Hmmmm Great job skot. I ususally don't get super excited for the early tiny ones. I like to wait just a little bit bigger. I went last night and the signs in the woods pointed to the ground isn't quite there yet. If you do come across a sunny north hill facing south out in the open more, you will find some there but not in the woods yet. I will go out this weekend, im guessing it will just be a nice stroll in the woods (which i like anyways) but next weekend i'm betting we will find some to eat with fish - blue gills -and Venision steaks... Yes!

Yeah, we had what I think will probably be our last frost here last night (it actually got down to 22 F last night, kind of scary for any that may have started to come up around here), but the future lows look to have no chance of frost in them so I would say two weeks or so from now we should be into greys and yellows if this continues this way, as highs by sunday are gonna be back into the 70's!!!

Hate to rain on the parade but weather forecast after this weekend looks like back to near normal temps...should slow things a bit, predict at least three weeks to they really get crankin if it warms back up....highs in 50's and lows in 30's are not so good...

Found my first of the year. Lots of little greys up that should eventually turn into beautiful large blonds. Only picked 1 for the picture as I didn't have my camera on me at the time. Saw 20+ before I decided to back out as they were so tiny i didn't want to step on them.

Anyone in the greater Stevens Point/Wausau area finding any morels (blacks?) ? I've been waiting to see Patrick pop up on here, but he has been silent so far this year.

I couldn't help myself. I have been watching these for over a week now. Their growth seemed to have slowed/stopped, the ground was really dry around them, the slugs were starting to get to them, and they seemed to be drying out. We need rain badly if we expect to have much of a season. Anyway, a friend of mine and I picked about 40 small greys in about 30 minutes. I am sure that there are still some out there, so I will probably go back to see what I can find later. Hopefully the rain they are calling for tonight comes. I know that they are small, but as I said earlier, I basically wanted to get them before the elements and wildlife took them instead. First the proof (we roughly split the "haul", this was my share): And then just a really nice picture:

Nice morels DD! Did you EAT them yet? Was it heaven?
(I edited this because I tend to have problems with the autofill option on my phone; it puts in words I don't want if I type something wrong on that tiny phone keyboard...)

I haven't been out yet, but think I'll take a gander for blacks this weekend. I'll let you know what I find. Gyromitra's are a good indicator for the beginning of blacks in my area. I'm hoping to see them this weekend. I'm heading to northern IL for my yearly morel foray on 4/12. I'm guessing thats when things will peak there. We definitely have at least a few weeks before we really start seeing the greys....though their could be some anomolies in the meantime. happy hunting!

That itch paid off after spending a few hours out and about today I have figured out where my early spot is. This being only my second year its taken me awhile to figure some things out but I'm getting there,Jason got me really started last year and I found quite a few for myself .Now I have a number of areas that I look in and the early spot has probably about 40 or so in it, being as close to the big pond as I am I dont think I should have to worry about frost later this week.It does make finding a microclimate that much more important though.
We tend to get lots of Northeast wind which keeps the ground really cool, however the ground in most of the ares I have been checking is really moist and holding it really well.
