So, Defo Dan: Where do you work? Just kidding. I teach at two different schools in Waukesha, and have about an hour to get from one to the other. I end up with about a half hour of free time. a week and a half ago, I was passing a very small park, with about 1/4 acre of woods. a couple dead elms. Couldn't help myself, I stopped for a quick peek. Picked a pound. What a surprise, and a bonus to dinner.

I stopped to check out some public land on my way home from work yesterday, I found all these within 6 feet of the nature trail, two were even growing in the trail.

Found about four pounds today. Northern Washington county. About a mile south of the county line and about eight miles east of the county line.A few medium size greys maybe 15 percent. Rest were small to medium yellows. Biggest about four inches most two to three. A few were a little dry or frost bit but they will dry just fine.Would of liked to leave them to get bigger but too many trespassers been hitting the property. Found about fifteen on a slight slope west facing in open hardwoods not a dead tree in sight. Rest I found on a south facing field edge. Dead elms and live hickorys. All were within about twenty feet of the field edge in sunny spots warmer soil temp I figure. Spot was about twenty five yards long. Greatest concentration I have ever found. My usual spots have yet to produce. So I am hoping based on that and no monster yellows yet we might have a little time left yet in the season. If not thats fine I got more than I usually get for the year already. Not to say I am done looking though.

I gotta catch the trespassers in order to scare them off. They have been a step ahead of me this year. Finding kicked up leaves and stumps. Even driving a different vehicle this year. Thought for sure I would of caught more than the one trespasser I have gotten this year. Oh well at least I have about as many shrooms I hope to get each year. Anything more is icing on the cake.

Nice find trapperhub. I've been poking my head around the woods and haven't seen much, but knew they'd be starting any day now. Looking forward to this weekend in Wausau!

Just took a short walk around one of my spots in Wausau and found two grays - one big one (4 inches) and one medium (2 inches). This weekend should be pretty good and next weekend should be the peak for this area - that's my guess...
The weather is really setting us up for a prime year here in Central/Northern WI in my opinion.

Beefsteak false morels (what the book calls them) all over the farm I am working at for May and 6 black morels showed up under an old apple tree. The farmer said "The only thing Id expect to find less than morels next to the house is gold coins!"
Since the blacks have just shown up I guess our season up here is just getting started!

We went up to the inlaws' place in Polk County yesterday with high hopes, but it must still be a little early for morels up there, or i really suck at finding them. I found two right away, and spent the next 2 hours looking, and getting soaked, and found no more in any of the spots where i have found them before. Anybody else from around there finding them yet? I'm not sure when I might be able to make it up there again though.
