I found these five big round shrooms, totaling 1 lb., in Iowa County on April 26, 2012. <a href="http://s1103.photobucket.com/albums/g469/rkschoolcraft/?action=view¤t=WISCONSINMUSHROOMS2012026.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1103.photobucket.com/albums/g469/rkschoolcraft/WISCONSINMUSHROOMS2012026.jpg" border="0" alt="Five Big Round Morels, Found these five big morels, totaling one pound, on April 26, 2012"></a> I'm also posting a link for my Youtube video of this hunt, which shows how to identify dead elms, the above morels and much more. The title is: Morel mushrooms - Confessions of a "Tree Hunter" - Part One. www.youtube.com/watch?v=yi-HudYbHXYThanks to you all for sharing all your posts. They have been invaluable. God bless.

Shroomcrafter, I remember watching your 22lb tree video last year. Just unreal. The nights we all dream of a chopping morels for 2 hours are plenty. I've heard of a 1000 morel tree in LaCrosse a couple years ago.

Yeah, I agree. I think that is about all we are going to get for the season. Maybe there might be a few posts by the northern folk, but things are done around the Madison area. It would be nice if now that the weather is warming back up we could get a second flush. I doubt it though. Maybe some of the areas that didn't pop in the early warmth could pop now? Who knows..... I saw some morels being sold at the Middleton farmers market today. They wanted $18/lb and agreed that the season is done around here. On to Chant season!!!!

Can't wait for Chant season. This will be my first year hunting them in Wisconsin. I hunted them for the first time last year in the UP.
I think we may have this week and a little bit of next for central and northern WI. From what it seems like here the spots in the woods more and on the north slopes should be coming within the next week really good.

MushroomMike, You have a good memory, connecting my name with the 22 lb. mother lode video of last year! I went back to that tree again on April 24, and, unbelievable, it was so dead it only produced one mushroom. I walked up to that tree expecting at least 5 or 10 lbs. under it. I guess that shows what a miracle it was last year. What a difference a year makes.

S.W. Wisconsin I realize it’s a little late for this year, but I just posted a video on Youtube to assist newbies in identifying dead elm trees. Title: Morel Mushrooms -- How to Identify Dead Elms. Veteran “tree hunters” will enjoy it also. Sometimes that’s all we find… www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Wi_MM8-Yj4

shroomcrafter:
Sorry for the late post. I found an amazing tree that I picked almost 22lbs at on April 23rd. One more shroom, and I'd have had 22 lbs. Guess I missed the one you found.
Just kidding. I've never come close to a 20 lb day, let alone a 20 lb. tree, but I have had several that produced multi-pounds one year, and nothing the next.

Yesterday I checked a north-facing spot on my property that is always very late, normally Memorial Day weekend. I found about a dozen big yellows there, several of which were quite dry. Also several pheasant backs. So- stick a fork in it, game over in Sheboygan County. This clump of dead had been very productive the last couple years, last year yielded about 10 lb. but this year not so much. I will hold off with the chainsaw for another year, just in case...

I think the year had some places up in abundance of morels while many other sites were way down and less than normal in production.

Chanterelles and boletes are next. I've been finding lots of oyster, but still haven't seen any early chickens. Looking forward to July....
